Basic Education lags behind in Makuta, Balaka district

Primary school in Malawi takes 8 years from standard 1 – 8. The government of Malawi introduced free primary education and this has increased the number of children going to school. But this increase has since brought major infrastructure problems and a big decline in quality.

The community of group village headman Makuta in Balaka district is not an exceptional. The moslem dominated community has only a junior primary school (standard 1 – 5) and the next primary school is 10kms away. Many children, especially girls drop out of school after standard 5 because they cannot manage to walk such a long distance to school.

Having seen the need for additional school blocks, the community organized itself to mold and burn bricks.

Basic education provides girls (mothers of tomorrow) with an understanding of basic health, nutrition and family planning, giving them choices and the power to decide over their own lives and bodies. Girls’ education leads directly to better reproductive health, improved family health, economic growth, for the family and for society, as well as lower rates of child mortality and malnutrition. It is also key in the fight against the spread of HIV & AIDS.

Basic education is a key to overcoming poverty. Poverty results from violations of human rights, including the right to education, which disproportionately affect girls.

The community plans to mold and burn over 128,000 bricks to build three school blocks to upgrade the primary school from standard 5 to standard 8. A roof is what they are asking for!!!!
